The fundamental counting principle tells us how to count different groups of objects where one is taken from each of a few categories. It is used often for choosing outfits: like "how many outfits are possible" or ordering off a menu: "how many dinner orders are possible". In essence, you just multiply how many choices there are in each category to get the total number of possible groups.
