If a number pattern is geometric or arithmetic, then we have formulas to use as shortcuts for finding the sums. However, if the pattern is neither geometric nor arithmetic, but has a linear x-term, then you can try using the shortcut formula. Here we do a sums by breaking them in to their linear and constant parts.
