We can use a shortcut to add a number pattern that is arithmetic, meaning that there is a common difference, d. This shortcut is based on knowing both the first and last numbers that we are adding in the pattern, so often you will need to use the explicit formula to find the last number in the pattern. Be careful with your notation- it is important to be organized about what is a term in the number list versus what is the actual sum.
