When we're working with an equation with an equals sign, we know that both sides of the equation have the same value, or are "balanced." In order to keep this balance, if we add something to one side, we must add the same thing to the other side. The same is true for subtraction: whatever we do to one side of an equation, we must do to the other side as well to maintain the equality. Solving for an unknown value, or variable, by adding or subtracting a value to both sides of an equation is a type of solving a one-step equation.
