If we know the total of something, that value will be isolated on one side of the equals sign, almost like a goal. The other parts will be combined on another side of the equals sign. Assign a variable for the unknown quantity, and use solving techniques to "undo" what's been done to the variable. Check to make sure your answer makes sense in the end.
