Our first step in isolating a variable is to "undo" any addition or subtraction using the opposite operation. It is mathematically valid as long as we do the same operation to both sides of the equation. Once all of the addition and subtraction is gone, we want to undo what's being done to x using either multiplication or division. Once you have your variable isolated, check your work by substituting your answer back into the original equation.
