Although we're used to doing math with integers, we can use the same operations to understand other symbols, as well. Here we have non-sense items, like hearts and smiley faces, but we can still see how they are re-ordered (commutative property). We can see how pairs of numbers or numbers and variables are re-ordered and re-grouped as well. These examples take the ideas of the commutative and associative properties to a more abstract level.
