The area of a rectangle is calculated by the length times the width, but if we have multiple rectangles stuck together in a "composite shape," we can find expressions for each rectangular area and add them up. Separate a strange shape into shapes that you are familiar with, write an expression for the area of each smaller shape, and find the total, combining like terms.
