One of the cool uses for proportional right triangles is to do indirect measurement- that is, measuring something without actually measuring it. Since the sun hits all objects with the same angle, we can use shadow lengths that we CAN measure to determine the height of tall objects, like flagpoles, trees, or even mountains. Be careful with units, like meters and centimeters or feet and inches- convert all values to one type of unit before doing any calculations.
