You can imagine that a right triangle is half of a rectangle, or a non-right triangle is half of a parallelogram. Hence, the area of a triangle is 1/2 the are of a rectangle or parallelogram- or1/2 base times height. You can also imagine making a sandwich and cutting it into two triangles- the area is 1/2 base times height, and, as always, the perimeter is the sum of all of the outsides.
