An exponent is a way of representing repeated multiplication. If I want to multiply 2 times itself 5 times, (like 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2), we could write it as "2 to the 5th power." The two part is called the "base" and the five is the "power," or "exponent." Be careful with negatives! (-3) squared is different from -3 squared!
