The first idea that you must understand about exponents is that they represent repeated multiplication. 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 could be written as 3 to the fourth power. It's the same calculation, just written in another way. If you have a negative base, be sure to write parentheses around it. Treat integer bases in the same way that you treat variable bases.
