Many people memorize the acronym PEMDAS to know the order of operations that we use to simplify math expressions- but the "P" for parentheses can be misleading. The first step includes parentheses as well as any kind of grouping, such as simplifying the numerator of a fraction even if it doesn't have parentheses drawn. This grouping simplification step would happen before any multiplying, dividing, adding or subtracting.
