In order to truly understand numbers, we need to be able to compare them- meaning, we need to know which are larger or smaller than others. A number line is a visual representation of ordering numbers. If you are presented with fractions to compare, they must first have common denominators. Then we can look at the numerators only to determine which is larger. If you are given mixed numbers, turn them into improper fractions and then find common denominators in order to make comparisons.
