In general, it is easier to do math operations (like add, subtract, multiply or divide) with improper fractions than with mixed numbers- BUT you have a choice. For adding or subtracting, you could either convert all mixed numbers to improper fractions first, or you could do the operations on the integer parts and fractional parts separately.
