If we want a general idea of a sum or difference of mixed numbers, we can round each one to an approximate "easier" form- consider rounding to have common denominators or rounding to integers. From there, we can estimate the sum or difference. This estimation is what you might do in the "real world" rather than convert to improper fractions and find the exact sum or difference.
