To turn a word problem in a math equation, we want to decide which operation (or operations) to use- adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing. In this particular case, we are finding something "all together," which is a key word for addition. We add mixed numbers by either adding the mixed numbers re-written as fractions, or adding the whole number parts and fractional parts separately.
