If we try to add fractions with unlike denominators, we run into trouble because they represent different sized pieces of a whole. We could estimate the final sum or product based on a picture or estimation, but we can be exact if we first re-write the fractions with common denominators. In doing so, we don't change the value of either fraction, but make them into a form that makes more sense to add. Look for equivalent versions of the two fractions that have the same bottom (which is called finding a common denominator.)
