We can't combine fractions when they're presented with different denominators because they represent different sized pieces of a whole. However, we can re-write them in equivalent forms that have a common denominator so that they DO represent same size pieces. Then we subtract the numerators only and leave the new denominator. Don't forget to try to reduce the fractions in the end if possible.
