Half of the battle of solving word problems is being able to turn a word problem into a math equation to solve. As always, you get better with practice, but there are some key words that you can look for. "Is" usually means = , "less than" means subtract - , "more than" is add + , "three times" would mean multiply by 3, "sum" is the answer to an addition problem, "difference" is the answer to a subtraction problem, "product" is the answer to a multiplication problem, and "quotient" is the answer to a division problem.
