If you're good at memorizing patterns, you might choose to memorize the pattern for a binomial squared = a^2 + 2ab + b^2. Of course, "a" and "b" might be a variable multiplied by a constant rather than just a variable, which would mean that your middle coefficient might not be 2. Recognizing this pattern is a shortcut that might help you in more complex factoring.
