Number patterns, or sequences, can be described using either an explicit formula, where the n'th term can be found directly, or recursively, where finding the n'th term depends on the "n minus one" term. To write the explicit formula, look for what constant change is going on from one term to the next. The recursive formula has two key elements: it lists the first term, and what must be done to a term in order to find the next term.
