If you are asked to find the hundredth number in a pattern, you could write out all 100 numbers and hope you don't make any mistakes along the way, or you could use a shortcut: the explicit formula. The explicit formula is used to find any term in a number pattern if you know the d, or common difference being added/subtracted each time, and the first number in the pattern.
