The explicit formula of an arithmetic sequence tells us each term in the number list. To find the first term, we let n = 1, and to find the tenth term, we let n = 10, etc. Since we are asked to find the first four terms in particular, we plug in the values 1- 4 for n one at a time. There are shortcuts, too, that you'll get better at as you work more with arithmetic sequences.
