In many rational functions that represent real world situations, it is useful to solve for a certain parameter- that is, get one variable isolated. In order to do this, we try to "undo" what is being done to this variable. Often, if there are two equal fractions, we'll begin with the process of cross multiplication to get two equal products instead of a proportional relationship.
