Even animals living deep underground are part of the basic food chains/food webs and other interelationships of the biological world. For example, even a type of worm that does not ever surface lives in and eats decomposed plant matter-- made possible by plants which are reliant on sunlight for survival. Obviously, those above ground are also all dependent on the most basic building block of the food chain. Food energy, one of the main forces flowing throughout the food chain, originates with the plants.
