It's a disease that makes it hard for your blood to clot, so you will lose significant amounts of blood even from a shallow cut on your body. I believe it's a genetic disease.

Hemophilia is a sex-linked disorder that pertains to lack of blood clotting. Usually when you get cut, platelets release proteins to clot blood and prevent body from losing too much blood. However if you are a hemophiliac you lack certain proteins for blood clotting and even from a small cut one can bleed profusely and possibly die. I think there are certain medications one can take to help hemophilliacs.

It's not really true that there are no survivors. Modern blood transfusion technology has helped many hemophiliacs to lead relatively normal lives. It's slightly semantical, yes, but it's not an automatic death sentence.Note, too, that because it's a sex-linked recessive disorder, and found on the X chromosome, it is disproportionally found in males.
