You start out with your function f(x) = 3(x^3) - 9x + 1. so you find out what is f(x) as x limits to +infinity (as Dr. O put it, find f(x) as x gets really really big). 3(really, really, big^3) - 9(really really big) + 1because 3x^3 is so big when x is large the 9x+1 is inconsequential, so as x limits to infinity, f(x) limits to infinity. Then you find out what is f(x) as x limits to -infinity (as Dr. O put it, find f(x) as x gets really really big and negative). 3(-really, really, big^3) - 9(-really really big) + 1 because 3x^3 is so big when x is large the 9x+1 is inconsequential, so as x limits to infinity, f(x) limits to -infinity. so we know that f(x) goes from -infinity to infinity. Next we find the zeroes which if solved for are 1.674, - 1.785, 0.112 (use a calc). So start from x = -infinity, draw line from f(x) = -infinity to f(x) = 0 when x = -1.785, because it is not double root, overshoot and go positive, then go to x = .112 and f(x) = 0... continued in souce
