Does an equation have to be in a certain form to find the vertex?

You need the a and b values to find the vertex, but if the equation is in absolute value or linear form, how do you determine the a and the b?

Hi Alyssa -I think you are asking about the vertex of a parabola, correct?  If so, the answer is yes!  Here is the vertex form for a parabola that opens either up or down:where the vertex of the parabola equals the point (h,k).Not sure if your teacher or book discusses a parabola that opens to the left or right, but if so, the vertex form is this:The vertex is still the point (h,k)Hope that helps
