They're part of the immune system.  Helper T cells trigger cytotoxic T cells which destory invasive cells and also initiate the growth of B cells.  Some helper T cells become memory cells and produce memory B and cytotoxic T cells so the body can fight back quicker the next time a particular virus or bacteris tries to get started.
