let x be the price of each shirt 6x is the cost of 6 shirts. 6x + 17.50 = 98.50 6x = 98.50-17.50 = 81 x = 81 / 6 = $13.50

Let x= cost of shirts       y=cost of hats 6x+y= $98.50 So the hat costs $17.50- plug it back in the equation 6x+17.50=98.50      -17.50  -17.50 -------------------- 6x=81 x= 13.50 Answer: Each shirt costs $13.50 if the hat cost $17.50.
