it separates the DNA into bands across the gel and u can get an image of the person's DNA. then you compare it with known DNA electrophoresis sequences of other people. for example, a person was murdered with a knife. u find the criminal's blood on the knife too. u get that blood sample, get the DNA, put it through electrophoresis, get the sequence, then see if it matches the database of known DNA sequences of people.
