Because let's pretend it is equal for a minute:28 - 4√2 = 24√228 = 28√228 * 1 = 28 * √21 ≠ √2; √2 is almost equal to 1.414Therefore 28-4√2 ≠ 24√2

you can subtract irrational unless they have the same root it is like saying why doesn't 28-4y=24y. this is wrong. dont simplify unless both are multiplied by same root. if it is 28 square root of 2 -(4 square root of 2) then you will get 24 square root of 2
