At a local produce stand sugar–coated strawberries sell for $3 per pound and chocolate covered bananas sell for $4 per pound. How many pounds of strawberries must be purchased to have a 5–pound mixture that costs $3.60 per pound?

I cannot read your total mixture weight so lets call it W.  You can put in the right amount later. Let x = the number of pounds for the strawberries W -x is the number of pounds of the bananas. 3x is the value of the strawberries 4(W-x) is the value of the bananas 3.6W is the total value 3.6W = 4(W-x) + 3x 3.6W = 4W - 4x + 3x Rearranging: x  = .4W Just substitute in what ever your total mixture weight W is.
