Generally, a small nucleus is the most stable. The more and more neutrons and protons are added, the greater the chance that the nucleus will become radioactive and decay.

The larger the atom becomes, the less 'influence' the strong force has, and the EM force starts to have a greater 'influence', thus the atom starts to 'fall apart'/decay.
