x^2 + 4 = 0      x^2 = -4          x = + or - square root of -4          x = {-2i, 2i}

I have no idea where all those strange symbols came from.  I'll try it again...x^2 + 4 = 0x^2 = -4x = + or - square root of -4x = {-2i, 2i}

x^2 + 4 = 0x^2 + 4 - 4 = 0 -4x^2 = -4 since you are trying to find the value of x but the x is squared your answer is half of what is on the other side of the equal sign.  so x = -2 or 2
