4x +y = 16 3x-y = 5 ============= y = -4x + 16 3x - (-4x + 16) = 5 3x + 4x - 16 = 5 7x - 16 = 5 7x = 16 + 5 7x = 21 x = 21/7 x = 3 To find y, replace x, in EITHER equation given with 3 and simplify.  I will use 4x + y = 16 but you can use the other equation if you'd like.
