4x +y = 16 3x-y = 5 ============= y = -4x + 16 3x - (-4x + 16) = 5 3x + 4x - 16 = 5 7x - 16 = 5 7x = 16 + 5 7x = 21 x = 21/7 x = 3 To find y, replace x, in EITHER equation given with 3 and simplify.  I will use 4x + y = 16 but you can use the other equation if you'd like. Let x = 3 4(3) + y = 16 12 + y = 16 y = 16 - 12 y = 4 Solution: (3,4). In ther words, the answer is x = 3 and y = 4. fdr84@hotmail.com

y = -4x + 16y = 3x - 53x - 5 = -4x + 167x = 21x = 34(3) + y = 16y = 4(3,4)

You can also use the elimination method, adding the two equations together to get...   4x+y=16+(3x-y=5)    7x   =21      x   =3Now substitute x=3 into either one of your original equations...  4x+y=164(3)+y=16  12+y=16         y=4
