If you are holding a string out in front of your hand and walking through the room the string will push air molecules out of the way.  If you try that in liquid, some liquid may move a little but water is so attracted to itself that it would deflect the string somewhat and then the strings organic proteins fibers would begin to attact water molecules to the hydrophilic portions of the proteins.  If you tried pushing the string into a solid, the solid particle attractions would keep them together and repel the electrons in the string so the string would crumple.  It is too big to insert inbetween the atoms of a solid.
