let x = the amount invested at 4%.  Then 1200-x is the amount invested at 6% .04x +.06(1200-x) = the interest gained which is $55. Multiply every term by 100 4x +6(1200-x) = 5500 4x + 7200 - 6x = 5500 7200-5500 = 6x-4x = 2x 1700 = 2x $850 = x the amount invested at 4% 1200 -850 = $350 = the amount invested at 6%
