if u r writing on a computer, then use this symbol: ^. (It's shift+6).

Well, first of all, it's "Exponents."Secondly, on paper, the base number is normal sized and the exponent follows as a superscript. Unless you're typing, then the exponents are like this:x^2 (x squared)(2x+7)^4"^" can be found by pressing shift and then 6.
