since the exponent is negative, you make it a fraction by placing a one on top. the you change the decimal into a fraction(1/4), now just solve 81^1/4 by taking the 4th root of 81

Actually, the previous answer was correct.... you take 81 to the fourth root, then you need to take the reciprocal of that root... which is 1/3
