If it's 35% profit over his cost, that will make the value of $670 a percent of 135%. It goes like 135%=670 135/100=670, so by cross multiplying  we have 670 x 100 / 135  = 496.   - not to forget the order or operations!!! To check, we find 35% of 496 = 174.496 + 174 = 670, the initial value.There you go :)
