You are working on a project in woodshop.  You have a wooden rod 72 inches long.  U need to cut the rod so one piece is six inches longer than the other piece.  How long should each piece be?

Okay, we know that:First Piece + Second Piece = 72 Because once we cut the whole rod both pieces add up to the total length of 72.Now, we do not know the First Piece's length, so we call that x.The Second Piece is 6 more than the First Piece, so call that x + 6.Then our equation is:x + x + 6 = 72Now, we have an equation for our problem and all we have to do is solve for x.  First combine like terms on the left side,2x + 6 = 72Then subtract 6 form both sides to get the x term alone on the left side.2x = 66Now, divide both sides by 2 to get x.x = 33.Now we have First Piece's length.  We simply add 6 to it to get the Second Piece because we said the Second Piece was x + 6.33 + 6 = 39.Let's check these to make sure they add to 72.33 + 39 = = 72Okay, checks out.
