suppose the width of the counter is w. then the length is 16+w. So the area w(16+w) = 420. w^2 + 16w -420 = 0. w = 14 (or -30). Therefore the width is 14 and the length is 30

w^2 + 16w -420w = 14l = w + 16 = 30
