The kings just claimed that God or whoever's up there proclaimed them king, and because everybody was religious at the time, if the religion backed them then no one was going to argue except another God-chosen ruler and yeah...It really seems like God decided that ruling was too much for one person, so he delegated it to a heck of a lot of people, then decided that it was too boring to split it up, and so gave them the ability to want other people's land... ??
