well basically the idea behind orbitals is that in the s orbital, there is one orbital in which two electrons can fit themselves.  In the p orbitals, in one section there are three orbitals, each of which can fit two electrons, therefore fitting 6 electrons.  Finally, you can get into d and f orbitals, which hold 10 and 14 electrons, respectively.  Look in a Chem book if you really want to know.

Each orbital has it's on "shape" or likely path the electrons travel. If you do a search on orbitals on google or bing you should find a nice diagram that shows you how the orbitals combine to make a shell, and how the orbitals are filled, and info on thier spins.
