1/12 + 1/8      Get a common denominator and add the fractions.

it's actually x/12 + x/8=1 the final answer would be 24/5 hours

If you add the fractions I made you get 5/24 which with units is 5houses/24hours    To find the time/house you would need the unit rate... 24hours/5 houses... or 24/5 hours per house. Same as your answer.  I'm new to this site... sorry... I'll explain more.  I thought it was to give hints and not to do the entire problem.
