let the first pipe be x(bigger) and the 2nd pipe(smaller) be y3y= x(x+y) can fill a tank in 9 hrs3y + y can fill a tank in  hrs4y can fill a tank in 9 hrs.y can fill a tank in 9/4 hrs. Thus, the bigger ( larger ) pipe will take 9/4 hrs to fill the tank alone.

i think i messed up with the answer below. so here is the correct solution :let smaller pipe be x and bigger pipe be yx=y/3 ( as smaller takes 3 times as long)(x+y) can fill 1 tank in 9 hrs.(y/3+y) can fill 1 tank in 9 hrs (substitute x=y/3)(4y/3) can fill 1 tank in 9 hrs. ( jus adding y/3 and y)thus, y can full 1 tank in 9 times 4/3 = 12 hrsTherefore, it will take 12 hrs for the larger pipe to fill the tank alone.
