im afraid the answer below is not completely correct.it says set to zero.thus,x^2 - 1 - 8 = 0 ( move 8 to the next side to get - 8=or, x^2 - 9 = 0or, x^2 - 3^2 = 0which is in the form a ^2 - b^2 which is (a+b)(a-b)thus,(x+3)(x-3) = 0either, x + 3 = 0           x = -3OR,   x - 3 = 0          x = 3thus , x = 3 or -3
