(x-7)^2 means to multiply (x-7) times itself so it is       (x-7)(x-7).  You can use FOIL or the distributive property. Using the Distribituve Property we multiply    x(x-7) -7(x-7)=x(x) -7(x)-7(x)-(7)(-7)=x^2-14x+49.

Expanding (x-7)^2 means multiply the (x-7) to itself:(x-7)(x-7) ==>   x.x   +     x.-7    -7.x    -7.-7 ---(FOIL)                          x^2         -7x      -7x    +49                          x^2 -14x+49that's it.
